The CARES Act, the $2 trillion\u00a0<a title=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/www.crfb.org\/blogs\/whats-2-trillion-coronavirus-relief-package\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">disaster relief bill<\/a>\u00a0enacted in late March, greatly expanded both eligibility for unemployment benefits and the generosity of those benefits. And those expanded benefits are, despite early stumbles, increasingly doing what needs to be done.<\/p>\n<p>Even so, a\u00a0<a title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hamiltonproject.org\/blog\/incomes_have_crashed_how_much_has_unemployment_insurance_helped\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Brookings Institution study<\/a>\u00a0suggests that in April unemployment benefits offset about half the wages lost because of the lockdown \u2014 an estimate that matches my own back-of-the-envelope\u00a0<a title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/paulkrugman\/status\/1261993209615581185\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">calculations<\/a>.<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Unemployment benefits: an unheralded success story.
